La Uni\u00f3n<\/a> Europea podr\u00eda prohibir el uso de t\u00e9rminos como ‘burger’, ‘steak’ o ‘sausage’ para alimentos de origen vegetal si prospera una propuesta respaldada por el Parlamento Europeo. Los eurodiputados votaron a favor de reservar estas denominaciones exclusivamente para productos derivados de la carne, una vieja reivindicaci\u00f3n de las organizaciones agrarias.<\/p>\n

Esta medida, que a\u00fan requiere la aprobaci\u00f3n de la mayor\u00eda de los 27 estados miembros de la UE (una posibilidad incierta), representa una victoria para la eurodiputada francesa C\u00e9line Imart. Imart, tambi\u00e9n agricultora, argumenta que \u00abun ‘steak’, una ‘escalope’ o una ‘salchicha’ son productos de nuestro ganado, no arte de laboratorio ni productos vegetales. Es necesaria transparencia y claridad para el consumidor y reconocimiento para el trabajo de nuestros agricultores\u00bb.<\/p>\n

La propuesta se alinea con regulaciones europeas existentes que ya proh\u00edben el uso de t\u00e9rminos como ‘leche’ o ‘yogur’ para productos no l\u00e1cteos. Ya en 2020, el Parlamento Europeo rechaz\u00f3 una prohibici\u00f3n similar, pero el cambio pol\u00edtico tras las elecciones de 2024 ha inclinado la balanza hacia posturas m\u00e1s cercanas a los agricultores.<\/p>\n

La oposici\u00f3n a la medida provino principalmente de los eurodiputados Verdes, quienes la calificaron de \u00abpopulista\u00bb y \u00abcortina de humo\u00bb. Argumentan que las denominaciones como ‘veggie burgers’ o ‘tofu sausage’ no confunden a los consumidores. Incluso dentro del Partido Popular Europeo (PPE) de Imart hay divisi\u00f3n, con algunos l\u00edderes se\u00f1alando que \u00ablos consumidores no son est\u00fapidos\u00bb y que existen asuntos m\u00e1s prioritarios.<\/p>\n

Grandes supermercados alemanes como Aldi y Lidl han expresado su oposici\u00f3n, temiendo que la prohibici\u00f3n dificulte la toma de decisiones informadas por parte de los consumidores, especialmente en el mercado alem\u00e1n, el mayor de productos vegetales en Europa. El sector ganadero franc\u00e9s, por su parte, respalda firmemente la iniciativa, advirtiendo sobre el riesgo de \u00abenga\u00f1o al consumidor\u00bb.<\/p>\n

Cabe recordar que Francia intent\u00f3 implementar una prohibici\u00f3n similar en 2020, pero fue declarada ilegal por el Tribunal de Justicia de la UE en 2024. Estudios de organizaciones de consumidores, como BEUC, sugieren que la mayor\u00eda de los compradores no se sienten confundidos por estos nombres siempre que el producto est\u00e9 claramente etiquetado como vegetariano o vegano.<\/p>\n
